Today, over 84,000 San Diego County residents are estimated to be living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. While Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the nation, it is the third leading cause in our county. The Alzheimer’s Project is the San Diego County-led initiative to address one of the largest public health challenges facing our region. Alarmed by the growing toll of the disease on local families, taxpayers, health care providers and others, I immediately accepted an invitation by Supervisor Jacob to help lead the initiative. While other parts of the nation have launched similar efforts, none match San Diego County in scale and ambition. Under the umbrella of The Alzheimer’s Project, our region’s top political leadership, research institutions, public universities, health care systems, caregiver groups and others are working as a team to help families and to do nothing less than find a cure.
